For once, less snow was the selling point. While the Chilean side was expecting considerably larger storm totals, Las Leñas looked more likely to offer a manageable amount of new snow—and a chance to actually ski it rather than stand around waiting for roads and lifts to reopen. That was reason enough to cross the Argentine Pampas with my Yeti camper and spend four days in this rather unique corner of the Andes. Yesterday brought a bluebird morning after the season’s first major snowfall. I toured on a low-angle east aspect to get an initial impression of the snowpack. Snow height increased from 60 cm at 2,250 m to around 70 cm at 2,400 m, with 13 cm ski penetration. Wind had already left a visible signature on the surface. In isolated areas, I found a thin wind crust approximately 2–3 cm thick, but plenty of soft snow remained and the turns were well worth the journey. No signs of recent natural avalanche activity were observed in the terrain travelled. Apart from two hares, I had the place entirely to myself. Perhaps everyone else had their priorities straight and was watching the World Cup final.

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
If you need help with the operation or have suggestions for improvement, please write to us at app@powderguide.com!
