Snow report Montafon, 02/04/2016

The amount of fresh snow is okay. However, the wind and the heat are the spoilsport.

Snow condition

I'm sticking with 2 stars here, as downhill runs in particular are a challenge for the equipment. Between 1,400 m and 2,000 m, the snow conditions are really good and allow many variations. Above that, almost everything is blown away by the wind.

It was already raining in the valley in the morning! The snow was wet up to over 2,000 m. It was easy to ski up to approx. 1,700 m, below that it became quite difficult. In the evening, a light cover was already noticeable well above 1,800 m. The warming will destroy the remaining patches. It will be interesting above 2,200 m on the shaded side, but it's very dangerous there!

Risks

We were only out and about in the busy variant area. The poor snowpack structure was already clearly noticeable there. Several crusts criss-crossed the snow cover. Apart from small skier's slides, we didn't notice anything. The Leuba-Buba set off at least 3-4 "noodles" in the extremely steep, rocky terrain, but there were no more than superficial slides. A look at the snowpack (approx. 100 cm / 33° / eastern slope / 2,100m) shows many different crusts in the upper 30-40 cm. This is followed by the collapsed smooth surface (below a crust). This is followed by approx. 40 cm of compact snow and an approx. 20 cm layer of floating snow near the bottom (huge cup crystals!).

The day was okay. I personally expected more and hoped that it would stay colder. In the evening, the whole of the off-piste terrain close to the lifts (extremely steep to flat) was completely covered in powder! Clouding of the senses seems to be a side effect of "powder addiction" that is difficult to get under control.
