Snow report Montafon, 02/04/2017
Situation report from the Silvretta. Snow conditions better than expected but still well below average for the current time of year. The descent today was a mixture of nasty windsnow, crumbly and stable melted snow. And all that

Snow condition
Up to about 2000 m, the snow cover seems quite homogeneous. Here it is consistently > 50 cm. Then it becomes variable. Depending on the exposure, from nothing to a lot. A lot has been transported. With a defensive choice of route, it is quite possible to head for easy targets.
Snow quality
Very variable. Without wind, it would still be nice and powdery above 2000 m. But unfortunately it was bad wind slush. From 2000-1600 m widespread crumbly broken harsch. Below that very compact but partly sticky. Currently independent of exposure.
Risks
Relaxed below 2000 m. Many sliding snow slides have come down from steep flanks, reaching far down in exposed places. Above 2000 m there is a lot of drifting. Steep terrain is currently very tricky: Drift snow, old snow problems and the transitions from a little to a lot of snow.
Overall impression
Nice exercise therapy. The weather was much worse and the precipitation started as early as midday. The strong gusts and poor visibility rounded off the day. The last 600 m were quite fun to ride.
