Snow condition

Snow conditions are still sufficient, but unfortunately the spring situation has arrived a little too early for the end of February. South-facing slopes are starting to snow out at altitudes of over 2,000 meters: exposed areas such as ridges, ridges etc. are already green and you have to look for your way down the south-facing slopes here and there. Below approx. 1,500, sun-exposed slopes are already mostly bare. There is still a lot of snow on the north side, of course, but the heat hasn't done as much damage here. Descent from the Lindauer Hütte to Latschau/Golmerbahn still possible without any problems; will also survive the next few days well.

The night was clear and it was freezing through at all altitudes with a load-bearing layer of snow. On the south side, you could therefore catch perfect firn today - departure at 10.30 a.m. via the south-facing slopes from the Gaisspitze towards Ob. Sporaalpe. 4* for that. Unfortunately, there's definitely nothing left on the north side: a mixture of hard snow, wind-pressed old snow and, in the Sportatobel, spiced up with lots of rough old tracks. Nevertheless, very grippy and relatively easy to ski, as there is no broken snow. So 1.5* on the north side.

Risks

Classic early season situation: be out early, be out of the south-facing slopes early and then everything is fine. In the Kreutzspitze/Geißspitze area above the Lindauer Hütte, the large wet snow avalanches have already left in the past few days and are now down in the valley.

Overall impression

Snow conditions and star distribution typically split in two for spring. 4* super firn on the south side with good timing (today the 10.30 - 11.00 departure was ideal). The search for powder is definitely over: on the north side there is nothing loose to be found even in the shadiest hole and you have to deal with wind-pressed old snow. No broken snow in the Sporatobel today, so it's easy to ski. North side therefore 1-2*
But regardless of the snow, today was actually a 5* day out there; and little will change over the next few days.
