Wintery start to the season
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Generally too little to ski off-piste. But it smells of winter and above 1,500 m it is visually a beautiful winter landscape. From this altitude, there is a good 10-20 cm of well-set snow. From approx. 1,900 m it is a good 40 cm. With increasing altitude, it becomes more and more variable and is influenced by the wind. On the north side, the first few centimeters of the ground are quite moist and have built up. The SF limit today was around 1,400 m during the day.
Snow quality
Above approx. 1,900 m, powdery but noticeably wind-affected. This is hardly a problem when riding. Noticeably damp below that. Above 2,200 m there are clear signs of wind and drifts. At these altitudes and above, some of the gullies are already well filled ...
Risks
Above 2,200 m, I would award a 3 due to wind, poor connection in the snow and floating snow close to the ground. Below that, a 2, as the snow cover decreases rapidly and the risk of injury from natural obstacles quickly increases.
Overall impression
Nice first day of the new season. It's already quite good for skiing and there's a decent amount of natural snow. Last week I was biking in Graubünden at 1,900 m and this week I'm skiing. That's how I like it.
