Snow condition
As usual, the snow conditions still vary greatly in the early season. Shaded slopes above 2,000-2,400 m and areas protected from the wind are very good for skiing. If the slopes are very isolated, then stone contact can be avoided. However, these are still very localized. In these areas there is around 60-80 cm of well-set powder. Especially on the sunny side and below 2,000 m it is still far too little. There is only one star here.
Snow quality
The powder on the shaded side is very fine. Here you can surf in a controlled and buttery smooth manner. In these areas it is 4 stars. Unfortunately, this is only possible in very localized areas. In many places it has a windsnow cap and a melting snow cap on the sunny side. Here it fluctuates around 1-2 stars. On average, I give it 3 subjective stars ;-)
Risks
Above 2000-2200 m, the wind influence is clearly visible. Ridge layers are widely blown away. Small-scale loose snow slides and dangerous ground avalanches can be recognized. Subjectively mainly in the east-west exposures. On the shaded side, a clear surface rime is visible wherever there is snow.
Overall impression
The season is picking up speed. There were around 3,000 people in the area today. Considering that only a small part of the area is in operation, it felt really full this morning. In the Hochjoch area, all the variants close to the slopes were skied today. For example, the slopes up to the Zamangspitze and the Kühtali. Below 2,000 m, however, you still need quite a bit of snow to think about fun off-piste skiing.
