The foundation is good, but more is needed ...
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
There is a basis. However, this is still very variable. Below 1,500 m it is not yet sufficient. Many trees, tree stumps, stones, ditches, avalanche weeds, streams, uneven terrain etc. are still open. Riding at full throttle still harbors a lot of potential danger. Up to the tree line it is relatively homogeneous, then it becomes variable. Selected larger slopes can already be ridden well. Yes, it's better than the last few years, but it's not too difficult to top that.
Snow quality
On Saturday morning, a soaked blanket of snow could be found in many places up to over 2000 meters. Around midday, it was still raining up to around 1900 m. The snow line then quickly dropped below 1500 m. In the early afternoon, it was already possible to ski "piste powder". The fresh snow fell on a consistently warm blanket of snow. It cooled down considerably with the cold front. Today it was around -8° C in the mountains and +1° C in the valley. The snow has fluffy potential, but the warm base and the wind spoiled the overall impression. There were a few very good turns in the sheltered forest area.
Risks
Due to the clear wind influence, which is clearly visible above the tree line, defensive behavior is appropriate. It is possible that a sliding layer (cold to warm) will form in the next few days under the drift snow on top. A few fish mouths are recognizable and some fresh offshoots.
Overall impression
Nice "first" powder day or best season day? The competitors were limited and we were able to ski down several thousand meters of fresh powder first tracks today. Touring was superfluous today even if there had been good offers. The critical avalanche situation demanded defensive behavior. As there are still many obstacles in the terrain that pose a potential danger, we still need a lot of snow. Below 1500 m it generally looks bad for off-piste skiing.
