Gargellen - Schneeberg über Vergaldaalpe
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Basically still very little snow and often no or very little base. Well possible from Gargellen (Schafbergbahn valley station) thanks to fresh snow on Friday/Saturday. Here, however, there is only around 20 cm on the green meadow. Into Vergaldatal and ascent through the steep step on the forest road goes very well. Very variable snow cover on the open areas: ridges and crests blown off and hardly any snow, hollows and gullies quite well filled. There is simply not enough snow for a fun descent on this tour: you have to "shimmy" from hollow to hollow in order to get down halfway unscathed; the Fortsweg out to Gargellen goes very well. With the forecast period of good weather, the snow cover in the lower part will probably decrease again quickly.
Snow quality
The snow quality itself is really not bad: there is fine powder in hollows protected from the wind. Otherwise, the more exposed areas were affected by the wind and therefore had a small wind crust on top. Nevertheless, it was still easy to ski. It was quite warm today, i.e. the snow was already heavy and damp up to around 1,900m. Above that it was still cold and powdery.
Risks
Ridges and ridges are blown off and all the powder is therefore in the hollows, which you need to get down at the same time. Danger spots are easy to recognize, but caution is advised. Shark Attack: The main danger is definitely the rocks. No foundation and for the most part simply too little snow. Defensive and anticipatory driving is definitely advisable!
Overall impression
We were out and about anyway; it wasn't really fun today: little snow, lots of blown-off areas, diffuse light and an unpleasant wind.
Snow is actually great, but it's just not enough yet. We definitely need a supply of snow here to make it really fun.
2* because the snow was generally really good, but not enough of it.
