Snow condition
The hefty load of fresh snow on Thursday and Friday led to the greatest powder delights. On the approach to the Monte Rosa hut on Thursday, we skied over the Breithorn summit and then over the Schwärze glacier. The descent through the Schwarztor was sensational. The finest powder, the glacier breaks well snowed in and the weather made orientation easy. Saturday descent from the Signalkuppe in similar conditions. Below 3300 m there was light sun cover.
Snow quality
Thursday, Friday powder everywhere and at all altitudes. Saturday powder up to 3300 m, below that still hard snow until the early afternoon, then slush.
Risks
No problems at all above 3500 m (if you ignore falling seracs). Below, massive rockfall and sliding snow avalanches from sunlit slopes well into the night. North-facing slopes well set and connected.
Overall impression
Dream weekend. Powder, calm winds and pure sun....have had such pleasant conditions at over 4500 m. Only the summit slopes were heavily blown off by the foehn and were correspondingly icy.
