Snow report North chain, 02/08/2019
Friday afternoon round on the Nordkette
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Generally great snow conditions. In some north-facing gullies, however, you still have to watch out for stone contact. The snow conditions there are worse than you would expect, but you can still reach the valley easily. Descent at the end via the toboggan run to Hoch-Rum.
Snow quality
Still powdery snow on the north side. However, there is also wind influence. Therefore wind-pressed in some places. From the Mandlscharte down to the top still good snow in exposures where the sun reaches the least. Otherwise wet snow on the south side of the Arzler Reise.
Risks
Some of the sliding snow mouths are wide open. You should definitely keep an eye on them. The LWD also warns of a weak layer in south-facing steep slopes between 2300 and 2600m. We could see a slab avalanche in southeast exposure at about 2300m as well as wet loose snow slides from sunny terrain.
Overall impression
Pretty much got the best out of Friday afternoon. Beautiful gully with good snow in tremendous surroundings. Then descended via Mandlscharte and Arzler Reise in the last light of day.
