Snow condition
special conditions require special measures. since, until now, the snow has not come to the ski tourers, they have to come to the snow. in the allgäu, this is normally done in may, but in times of global warming ... it's spring in the valley, snow starts on the north side at approx. 1100m, but you can't do anything with it yet, unless you find a forest/alpine road on which the hunter has already driven to his hunting ground umpteen times. first probably by skidoo and then by car. you can ascend on this "track" and, with 3 small interruptions, also ski down again without any problems. snow conditions are then sufficient from approx. 1400m to ski down in the terrain.
Snow quality
snow, on the road, from 1100m, harsh to icy. next to it, partly carrying. from about 1400-1600m a pretty nasty cap, which does not break immediately, but then in any case. above 1600m, today on the north side, finest, untracked, well set, pow !!!! yes, you read that right: there was great untracked pow, over about 500m. hence the 4.
Risks
safe. no slippery snow mouths seen. in the shade it was quite cold. in the sun quite spring-like. the 1 of bavaria is ok. the snow cover was very stable everywhere. neither in the ascent, nor in the descent, local drift snow accumulations could be triggered.
Overall impression
today i did everything right. a whole valley to myself. only saw 1 chamois and 1 eagle in the summit area. fantastic weather. super great snow, with about 500 meters of untracked pow, finest quality. on top of that, i opened the bike&ski season and ticked off a tour i had never done before. that's definitely a 4. for me it was an "epic day".
