Spring ski tour in the western foothills
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Below 1300m it gets very tight in the foothills. On the first 200m we had to carry a lot in between. Above that it gets better.
Snow quality
Above 1300m it was quite good in places. In the north, there was sometimes about 10-15cm of wind-pressed powder with a hard cap underneath. The cover held so that it was quite ok to ski in places.
Risks
There is already quite a lot of drift snow at the top, but the steepness there was not critical. Some of the ridges and summits are completely blown off and bare. On the south side and wherever the sun is shining, the snow is already damn wet and heavy from midday.
Overall impression
Overall, the two stars are mainly due to the good weather. Also, despite the carnival vacations, there was very little going on in the western foothills. At the top, the snow was still really solid.
However, there must be more soon. Otherwise the tours will only be possible with a lot of carrying. Today we were able to start directly from the Ostertal parking lot, but from Ofterschwang we had to carry the first 150 m today.
