Super conditions in the steep stuff
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Good skiing on the north side down to the valley (800m). Powder all day up to approx. 1100m. South side not quite as good. But the gullies are well filled. Right time: Powder on top, firn on the bottom.
Snow quality
Settled powder snow (approx. 10-15cm) from Monday on a compact base. From approx. 1100m then rather frozen through due to clear night and higher snow line on Monday. Yesterday it was still "soft". South-facing firn/snow from midday.
Risks
a 1 up to 2000m, above that a 2. It seemed to be quite safe. Only a very small surface slide in very steep terrain.
Overall impression
One of my best days on the steep northern slope of the Hochgrat. The most direct route from the summit to the valley. Safe conditions, good snow, but the start was borderline due to blown-off rock and the whole thing in quite extreme steep terrain. Now it's getting "worse" again, at least as far as the steep stuff is concerned, there's snow/rain/wind. Maybe it will be something again after that.
