Snow report Oberstdorf, 02/29/2020
pow becomes "fresh concrete", overnight
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
start, south-facing, at 1000m. about 20cm of very heavy fresh snow. then the snow depth increased to about 35cm below the tree line. no sharks today, but in the fresh concrete you have enough reaction time to get out of the way anyway.
Snow quality
you probably all know this very special consistency of fresh snow, when it gets really fast and really warm after a dump. in the past there was silver wax, today you just have to get through it. after a few raindrops fell on the ascent, it was pretty much the same on the north side.
Risks
rather safe, at least below the forest boundary. however, there is quite a lot of loose snow activity on all sun-exposed slopes. overall, however, there is too little fresh snow for anything major to emerge. the fresh concrete holds well and once it sets ...
Overall impression
as already suspected yesterday, it hasn't gotten any better. but it's still good enough for sensible ski tours. in the backcountry, a free choice of routes is possible for the most part.
