Early bird ski tour in the Radstädter Tauern with firn and summer firn
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
A start at 1600 m and the descent to the starting point are still possible without any problems. On the descent today, we were mainly on the north side and a bit on the east side. On the ascent, we had to cross a wet snow slope on the east side, where there was virtually no snow left (see pictures). In general, the snow conditions are still good for activities.
Snow quality
The clear night was not enough for a frozen snow surface below approx. 2100 m, above that there was a thin layer of melted snow. We started the descent at around 9 a.m. and found a mix of firn and summer firn, which was, however, very easy to ski.
Risks
An early start is essential. The cold reserve is used up very quickly, especially today when the air was more humid. Not all the slopes have been unloaded yet and cornices in particular make a frightening sight.
Overall impression
A nice tour with nice downhill conditions. There was also a small PG meeting today ;)
