Lawinenabgang und Freeriden in Obertauern
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Almost all variants are rideable without rock contact. With our eyes open, we were out and about all day today without any rock contact. Combs and backs partially blown off
Snow quality
Quite good. Mostly packed powder, partly also wind-influenced. About 20-40 cm of fresh snow all together. Easy to ski.
Risks
We observed a ground avalanche on the Seekareck right on the 2nd lift ride. As there were still skiers on this very slope about a minute before and we couldn't see the whole slope, we immediately informed the lift staff, alerted the mountain rescue service and started the search. I don't want to talk too cleverly here: https://www.meinbezirk.at/lungau/lokales/lawinenabgang-loest-suchaktion-in-obertauern-aus-m13755203,2333426.htmlNatürlich but: there were already large piles of snow on that slope before the descent, which would have been a definite NO-GO, at least for me, in conjunction with the llb. The two who had entered the slope shortly beforehand were very lucky in any case! As for the rest of the situation: snow conditions near and far from the crest, mostly, but not always easy to recognize.
Overall impression
Except for the departure in the morning, it was a very successful day, especially because the visibility was far better than expected.
