Snow condition

Since our last visit to Obertauern at the end of November, the snow conditions have improved somewhat. You can now get as far as the village (approx. 1700 m). However, the choice of route should be carefully considered. In open terrain, the wind has been working hard and all wind-exposed terrain such as ridges and ridges are more or less free of snow. In general, you should take a close look at the terrain where there is the most snow and then ski it rather defensively. Initial off-piste activities are feasible, but no more. Stone contact is to be expected. A lot of snow is still needed. Snow depths cannot be reliably indicated with the wind.

Better than expected. In an eastern flank we found some great powder snow (good 3 stars). The rest was a mix of hard/frozen spots, drifting snow and a bit of hard snow from time to time.

Risks

The accumulations of drift snow are easy to recognize both near and far from the crest and should be avoided (from approx. 1900 m upwards). Some of these can be easily disturbed. Troughs and gullies should also be assessed critically. The LWD's classification of warning level 2 (>2000 m) is appropriate.

Overall impression

We didn't expect the snow on the eastern flank to be so good. On top of that, the weather was beautiful - it was a great ski trip today.

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
If you need help with the operation or have suggestions for improvement, please write to us at app@powderguide.com!
