Snow condition
Ski tours without a glacier base are still pointless at the moment. There are too many sharks lurking on the surface. On the Mittelbergferner and Taschachferner, the snow conditions are good. On steep ridges the rock comes through or even bare ice. The Wildspitze north face has quite a lot of snow and appears to be at risk of avalanches. The flank above has 50 cm of drift snow on bare ice. The Jubiläumsgrat is tricky in places but doable with crampons and ice axe. The cornices are easy to break through due to the fresh snow.
Snow quality
Powder snow. Mostly influenced by the wind. Already heavy or crusty on the south side. In sunlit flat sections partly already a cover. The wind was also strong in places today. Wind-calmed powder in the northeast-facing saddle in the transition to the Mittelbergferner, fine with stone contact in the upper meters afterwards.
Risks
Wind intensity: Medium (20 – 40 km/h)
Crevasses, sharks and avalanches over the east and west, especially on the north side in steep terrain.
Avalanche activity
Dry slab avalanche (medium)
Altitude: 3300 m
Overall impression
Beautiful ski tour via the Jubilee Ridge of the Wildspitze and the Mittelbergferner. Steeper projects will have to wait a little longer due to the avalanche situation, but the snow conditions in the high Alps are already above average for the time of year.
