Snow condition

10 cm fresh snow

The snow conditions in the high Alps can at least be described as acceptable, and something like a blanket of snow has now formed on the steep flanks. However, there is still not much snow on the ice in places, and the rockier flanks could do with a lot more snow. Skiable, but unfortunately still rather borderline in places. Below the glaciers, however, the snow conditions quickly deteriorate. With a few interruptions, you can still ski 3/4 of the way out of the Taschachtal valley, but the carrying routes are getting longer every day and I would recommend a return ascent to the ski area.

Wet snow
Powder snow

At high altitudes (> 3000m) there is still fine powder snow on the north side. In all other exposures and altitudes, a light crust, which was created by (diffuse) radiation yesterday, is at least noticeable within the snow cover. There is another 5-10cm of colder powder snow on top of this crust. The snow became very wet during the course of the day below 3000m.

Risks

Crevasse or fall danger
Diurnal warming
South-West West

Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)

Generally favorable avalanche conditions. High alpine powder snow on stable old snow cover, surprisingly little wind influence. Watch out for wet loose snow avalanches from rocky terrain and the risk of crevasse falls.

Worse

Unfortunately, the weather was much worse than expected, but the snow was much better. So we were able to ski 2 steep slopes in good powder snow, thanks to the lift support of the Pitztal Glacier with relatively little ascent. If you still want to treat yourself to this comfort, you should hurry: The lifts are only open until May 8th.

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
If you need help with the operation or have suggestions for improvement, please write to us at app@powderguide.com!
