Snow report Pyrenees Orientales, 01/02/2015

Summer in the Pyrenees. With spring-like temperatures of 16°C, it doesn't really feel like winter anymore. Nevertheless, it was fun today in Formigueres.

Very different locally. While the wind simply blew away a lot of snow in Puyvalador (North Capcir), Formigueres once again saw the most snow accumulation. Les Angles and Font Romeu are also more influenced by wind and, above all, artificial snow. Lots of tracks off-piste, but not possible without damaging equipment. But the touring area around the Lacs de Camporells looks good!

Everything from ice and wind-pressed powder to slush yesterday and today. The artificial snow slopes in Les Angles and Font-Romeu still look more like ice rinks than ski slopes at the moment.

Risks

Below 2000 m, there is usually so little snow that avalanches are to be expected, mainly due to warming. But even above that, the sun is causing numerous slides, although none of them are too big. Nevertheless, I would be very cautious, especially because of the wind, which has transported large amounts of snow by Wednesday.

End of another fantastic Pyrenees vacation. First very cold and quite a bit of fresh snow (unfortunately without a base and with lots of wind). Then warmer every day and not a cloud in the sky. Unfortunately there wasn't much off-piste this time and we didn't go on any tours. But above 2000m there is a good base (in Capcir, unfortunately it looks worse towards Puigmal) and nothing should stand in the way of the touring season, which tends to start here in January/February.
