Powder heaven at the Cambre d'Aze
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
In the sunniest region of France, there was up to over a meter of fresh snow on Monday and Tuesday, which is staying fresh thanks to the continuing icy temperatures (-18 degrees this morning, 3 pm -8 degrees). Everything is rideable without even thinking about a handbrake.
Snow quality
No wind influence, dust with every turn. I've only ever been this cold on Spitsbergen. That's all I need to say.
Risks
Still a triple, some spontaneous blowouts can be seen on steep slopes of all exposures. Some couloirs have already been climbed, seems to have held. Quite large cornices at the top of the Cambre d'Aze.
Overall impression
What a fantastic day. Actually only planned as an exploratory tour on the otherwise often snow-poor Cambre d'Aze, we went up twice and had absolutely no powder stress due to the size of its flanks, despite a few tourers. Lots of very good snow. The last time I was as cold as today was on Spitsbergen. It couldn't have been better.
