Almost five hours from the Cerro Catedral parking lot to the hut via the summer route, since a ski ticket was way over the budget of a ski bum. That's the warm-up, apparently. From there we skied around Cerro Catedral Principal, which was as beautiful as advertised and delivered the full Frey snow buffet: moist and grabby below the hut by 9 a.m., a thin layer of actual powder higher up on south facing slopes, and everything in between for anyone who likes variety. By afternoon the visibility packed it in, so we made the mature, responsible decision to take the Summer Route out. The one we'd sworn never to do again. Turns out "never" is a flexible concept at 4 p.m. with no horizon. Rolled back in at 8 p.m. - thanks to Yeticampers.com - directly into the home parked at the bottom of the ski hill, 30-plus kilometres on the legs, at least 16 creek crossings with skis in our hands in the books. Frey is epic, the terrain is absurdly big, and we'd do it all again for sure. Just maybe with a different exit.
