Variations of snow cover

The glaciers are well covered in snow. On the standard tours, the majority of groups are not roped up, even on the ascent. The area around the Täschhütte has significantly less snow than the Saas Fee side. The Täschhütte can only be reached on skis and from the Täschhütte it takes about 500 m (following the summer trail) to reach the snow. Descent possible on the pistes (caution: very frozen and rough in the morning) to the Saas Fee tennis courts.

Very hard frost in the morning. Due to the cold last week, there was hardly any snow formation (except on completely south-facing slopes).

Equal

Last week, we headed up high at the end of the season: ski mountaineering in Valais. Once again it was a combination of Täschhütte and Britannia Hütte. Magnificent weather, well-snowed glaciers and comparatively few people (we drove down to the valley before the weekend) made for great conditions. In the end, only the snow quality left something to be desired, as even the April sun was unable to produce the buttery firn we had hoped for due to the cold. In other words, very hard, rough snow conditions. However, the rise in temperatures since Friday should now change that.
