Snow report Salzburger Land North, 01/03/2017
The nordstau started today, it looks like high winter BUT....

Snow condition
...the base is very, very small. Where there is something, there are still many obstacles such as rocks, tree stumps, mountain pines etc. that are not covered! Don't be fooled, because now the finest powder covers the stuff. A defensive skiing style will often be an advantage for both skiers and equipment! Above the tree line, strong winds are blowing. Partly off-piste and a few meters further on drift snow accumulations, so that you can't get through properly.
Snow quality
Decent in wind-protected locations! Should get even better with the drop in temperature.
Risks
...certainly critical above the tree line. Due to the situation we saw today (the alternation between apery patches and large drift snow accumulations on a few meters), I hope that people will switch on their brains in the coming days and reduce their powder lust a little. The old snow problem exists in the upper forest area where there is some base. About 25 cm below the powder layer we found a thin crust (almost certainly from the rain on 25.12.) and underneath that a build-up transformation (a few centimeters).
Overall impression
Very nice to be out and about in heavy snowfall and a beautiful winter landscape with good snow! But you should know what to do in the coming days. Keywords: - little to no base - strong wind, drifting snow - old snow problem - lots of fresh snow
