Snow report Salzburger Land North, 01/06/2020
Little fresh snow - lots of sun
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Still dramatically bad. An average of around 10 cm has been added in the middle areas, decreasing rapidly towards the bottom. There is little that can be done sensibly in the north and you have to limit yourself to favored, shady alpine meadows or slopes.
Snow quality
The fresh snow is cold and fluffy, but not enough to dampen the sometimes very hard old tracks. If you're lucky and have the nose to find something untracked, then it's pretty good. Sometimes blown off or very hard on ridges and wind-influenced corners. (2-3*)
Risks
Less critical at lower and middle altitudes. Directly after the snowfall, the Bavarian LBB only issued a 1 below the tree line and a 2 above. In the higher elevations, a lot of snow was certainly transported, as you could see from the blown-off areas, but this is put into perspective by the small amount of new snow. Anything that was reasonably rideable was chopped up immediately.
Overall impression
Quite okay, thanks to the nice company and the right nose for a few meters of untracked snow.
All in all, though, we urgently need snow if we're going to get anything out of the winter.
