Snow report Salzburger Land North, 01/30/2019

Snow condition

Still excellent. You can do a lot of things that haven't been possible in recent years. However, the very high locations look a bit blown, and it probably varies a lot depending on the Expo.

Snow quality

Very variable: from relatively deep powder (up to 30-40 cm = 4*), to shallower layers, to crumbly and compact cover (=2*) where the wind has raged. But generally on the good side. Exposure doesn't always play a role, but the north side tends to be the best. funnily enough, it was excellent at the bottom, between 600 and 800m: deep, soft and enough!

On my tour rather manageable: either well set or heavily wind-treated. In the forest I sign the 1 of the Bavarian LLB, in the high altitudes you could probably follow the 3 of the Salzburger. Large snow mouths and cornices are common and should be included in the tour planning.

Overall impression

Beautiful, quiet and relaxed tour in the Untere Saalachtal with mostly acceptable snow conditions. You have to look around a bit, but then you can still find some good spots.
Nevertheless, you should stay focused on your skis at higher speeds, as the snow conditions (especially higher up on the freer slopes) change on a small scale.
