In Saalachtal it's actually the same as in Berchtesgaden, just a few meters away: poor snow conditions at the bottom, really good towards the top, you can slide down into the valley, but only on suitable ground, forest is ok from about 1100-1200m on the snow side.
Snow quality
Really good at the top: moist, but nice and slippery and not slow fresh snow (from about 1300m). Underneath, unfortunately, very slowing cardboard snow, which is covered with a crust of rain ice towards the bottom, which unfortunately only makes it slightly faster.
Risks
Today one of the rare times when the LB for the Berchtesgadener is "sharper" than the one for the Salzburg Northern Alps, which is the same area. (BGD: 3 < 1800m vs SZB: 2
Overall impression
Beautiful afternoon cruise with quite strenuous ascent conditions (heavy snow for tracking, stubborn skins and quite warm).
On the other hand, far better snow than expected (at least >1300m) and the visibility got even better just in time for the descent.
The next few days will be exciting, but the snowpack has certainly become more unstable again and you have to see what works.
