Snow condition

Unfortunately, if you start from the valley, you have to carry more or less far. At 1000m, there is still enough snow everywhere on the shaded side (approx. 0.5m) and it gets more relatively quickly. At the top there is still between 2 and 3 meters.

Snow quality

Pretty good, fresh snow on average about 10-15 cm towards the top. Nice and fluffy above 1400m. You can actually always feel the cover underneath, it is partly grippy, partly soft, rarely hard. Towards the bottom, the fresh snow becomes quite moist and slower.

The Bavarian LLB has issued a 1 at the bottom (very compact and the moist fresh snow is well bonded to the old snow) and a 2 above the tree line (partial loads, poorer bonding to the old snow) and that fits very well.

Overall impression

Beautiful, wintry day in the Watzmann region.
The only annoying thing is that you have to carry quite a lot down below.
Fine snow on the ground, snow in the air and on the trees and not a single track on the route - what more could you want?
At the top, however, visibility was poor and the wind was very cold. I only just made it out of the forest.
