Snow report Salzburger Land North, 03/22/2018

Snow condition

Still a big altitude gradient. On the shady side in the middle to higher altitudes it's often really fat, sometimes there's a good 2m around. Very little at the bottom, the sun is already working hard on the south side and from about 1000m it's mostly snowy on the snow side.

Snow quality

It's best in the light, shady forest from approx. 1400-1850m: very fine, dry powder and the old snow underneath is usually deeper, with some nice powder underneath, but a rock-hard layer of old snow. Above that mostly influenced by wind.

Mostly low. Predominantly very compact old snow cover and often totally unbound powder above it. Sluff can sometimes be an issue on really steep slopes. On the sunny side, however, it's much harder and wetter. Despite the cold, you shouldn't forget the higher, steep south-facing slopes, but everything was easy to manage today.

Overall impression

Very nice day in fantastic terrain. No people, but lots of animals & tracks seen, new lines drawn & discovered and great photo light.
But there are deductions for the counter ascent and again problems with the Maestrale RS.
Tracks were also very exhausting... :)
