Snow report Salzburger Land Süd, 01/05/2017
3 days in Gastein. Here is a little update
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
The snow conditions are still not great. Although it has snowed a total of around 40 cm, this is falling on the mostly bare ground. You could have fun with stone skis in the forest, but most of the forest aisles were quickly covered in snow. Above the tree line there is no snow at all on wind-exposed slopes, but all the more on leeward slopes (see avalanche situation)
Snow quality
Really good. About 40 cm of fresh snow, cold and very fluffy when protected from the wind. Further up and in the sparse forest, however, very windswept.
Risks
very tense over the forest greze! All the fresh snow is close to the crest and far from the crest in gullies and hollows. The snow was very brittle, especially today due to the cold temperatures. Cracks are forming and there are some rumbling noises at the edge of the forest, but the danger spots are quite easy to recognize with good visibility.
Overall impression
The whole thing hasn't really convinced me yet. There's simply not enough base and in other areas there's probably a lot more snow than in Gastein. But those who know the beautiful meadow tours in the region will definitely have fun! P.S.: The photos are from yesterday. My cell phone refused to work today because of the cold...
