Snow condition
Today we took advantage of the beautiful weather for a ski tour in the Ankogel group. In terms of snow conditions, a high starting point or a forest path is recommended. From an altitude of approx. 1300 m, you can think about serious off-piste skiing. Above the tree line, the wind influence is quite massive and the snow distribution is quite inhomogeneous. On the sunny side, tours make little sense at the moment, the combo of the high temperatures and wind makes little sense. Some sliding snow slides have also emerged from the north-facing terrain. Amounts of fresh snow up to max. 30 cm.
Snow quality
Above the tree line, where the wind came to work, it was quite uninspiring and uninviting. A mix of broken snow, ice and powder. We changed our tour plan there and retreated into the forest, protected from the wind. There was unbound, lightly settled fresh snow on a non-hard base, an absolute downhill dream.
Risks
Wind intensity: No Wind (0 km/h)
The accumulations of drift snow were very easy to recognize today with the best visibility and it was easy to avoid them. There was a lot of sluff in the steeper forest today.
Overall impression
A cold north-facing excursion that turned into a very good day thanks to a change of plan.
