Snow report Salzburger Land Süd, 02/07/2019

Snow condition

Lots of snow (quite impressive snow walls on the road and the parking lots below). Edges and crests, however (as usual here anyway) blown off or hidden sharks.

Snow quality

Changeable. Lots of slab powder, crusty on the steeper south-facing slopes, still very fine, loose snow from the last fresh snow event (Sunday) in hollows sheltered from the wind.

A 2 was issued. Lots of sliding snow avalanche activity (a lot of bumping from the extremely steep south-facing slopes above the Gastein toll road). Some older slab avalanches (some with quite considerable avalanche heights).

Overall impression

Beautiful freeride day on the conventional routes in Sportgastein. Surprisingly little going on off-piste (in the Weissenbach variant and also in the north with quite good conditions still surprisingly much space for lines and that although it was already the fourth good weather day after the last snowfall).
In the last few days, the standard route down from the Schareck was also used (there were quite a few tracks to be seen).
The obvious slopes directly below or near the gondola lift were of course already very tracked and also unrewarding due to the influence of the wind.
