Snow report Salzburger Land Süd, 04/03/2018
Touring in the stormy south föhn is no fun, keyword drifting snow

Overall impression
Snow condition
We were on an eastern, north-eastern ski tour starting at approx. 1600 m. Very good snow conditions right from the start. After just a few meters you could see the wind tracks and old loose snow avalanches. The tracks were quite strenuous with sinking depths of around 10 cm and then again sections with partly stable wind cover and crossing loose snow slopes. Everything was quite inhomogeneous.
Snow quality
The descent was a mix of wet snow, wind cover (rarely viable) and softer drift snow. All in all, not a highlight.
Risks
Not without today. In the early morning, the snow cover wasn't really frozen and the snow was already damp. As the altitude increased, the wind became stronger and stronger and caused a lot of drifting. We were able to avoid some drift snow accumulations, but at some point the whole thing became very difficult to assess and we abandoned the tour. Below 2000 m the wet snow problem dominated today, above that a massive drift snow problem.
Overall impression
Outside is better than inside, although you could have done without this tour today.
