Spring conditions in the Tauern
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
South sides outside the glaciers and summits & ridges mostly poor. On the shaded side still very good, partly up to 1200-1300m well skiable.
Snow quality
Very varied: Above 2600m) still quite hard on the snow side even at midday. Below that, between 2400 and 2000m, a nice, firny layer. Below that, a mix of wind, old avalanche slabs and softer snow. Up to about 1600m often quite ok, but at the bottom out in the sun, unfortunately, braking snow.
Risks
There were no slab problems on our route: The snow cover is very compact, the little fresh snow (approx. 5 cm) is already hard or firny.Steep and slippery sunny sides become critical in the course of the day and should be avoided. We have seen a large and quite fresh slide (photo).
Overall impression
Great variant, away from the crowds around the Rudolfshütte. Timing for good snow was difficult today because it was so different at the different altitudes, but I think it was ok.
Great ambience, extra star - because it's nice that something like this is possible again.
However, the ascent was brutally hot on the sunny side and we didn't need the sticky snow at the bottom.
