Light and shadow in the western Tauern...
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Just two stars. Depending on the exposure, you have to carry very far. Despite my relatively high starting point (1450m), I still had to carry my skis a good 450m (ONE in the lower part), and from around 1900 it was quite good, purely north-facing and even lower in avalanche zones. Good from 2000m.
Snow quality
Due to the lack of radiation and hours of continuous rain, deep swamp far up. From approx. 2400m, the top is damp, tough and brittle. From approx. 2700m it becomes stable and with a few cm of fresh snow on top it's really nice to ride.
Risks
Not without. Bottomless wet snow in the deep and middle layers, then additional destabilization with the sun. Otherwise I wouldn't have gone up the very steep and (fortunately in this case) apererous lowest part of the ascent under any circumstances. on the other hand, a lot has already gone down in the last few days, you can see many small and medium-sized, occasionally also larger slopes.
Overall impression
Extremely contradictory feelings. The first half very difficult conditions: 3 hours of rain in the morning, me wet, the snow wet, partly zero visibility, very defensive route choice necessary. After an hour of waiting and freezing, then suddenly sun and visibility, great ambience, better snow towards the top and lots of cool observations (chamois, red deer, fox, fantastic Swiss stone pines), very nice, conciliatory end, overall still relatively good conditions in the northern Tauern valleys, even away from the glaciers should still be possible for a while. But definitely start high up!
