There is at least enough snow below the tree line to ride at speed and without fear of sharks or trees (solid 3*) The view above the tree line is different (today only from a distance, approx. 0-2*). It looks really dramatic in places, whole flanks are partly blown bare. You quickly realize that there is not much to be gained up there.
Snow quality
Nice set powder (approx. 30cm), well bound. Hardly any ground contact, only at the entrances at the tree line partly hard wind harsh cover.
Risks
No observations where we were on the move (approx. 1500-2000m NW) Even in steeper places or on scooters nothing happened or moved. It was different above the tree line, where we didn't even stick our noses out above it. The many current reports of avalanches are easy to follow.
Overall impression
To our surprise, Sportgastein was closed for the last two days and the lifts will probably not be open until January. What was initially option B due to the limited possibilities turned out to be a wild card. We only ever went as far as the middle station and did a few laps. For the current conditions, you could hardly get a better shot.
