Snow condition

20 cm fresh snow

Descent through forest

The overall snow situation is very good, the forest including deadwood etc. is very well snowed in. The amount of fresh snow in the valley was just over 10cm, on the mountain (alpine region) just over 20cm. According to LWD Styria, up to 40cm is expected at high altitudes in the Totes Gebirge. The snowfall continued overnight and continued - with varying intensity - until the early afternoon. Sleet was also mixed in from time to time.

Snow quality

3 von 5 Sterne
Hard, pressed snow
Powder snow
Wind drifted snow

Fresh snow on a hard, frozen base. The quality of the fresh snow was 4 stars in the wind-protected forest area above approx. 1000m. Below that, moist, loose snow. Above that, in the alpine pasture terrain, the snow was loose, but still clearly bound, good to ski, very good in the forest area. But the slightly too high temperatures at the bottom and the wind influence at the top speak against the 4 stars.

Wind drifted snow

North East South-East South

Intensity: medium

Risks

Cracking (When entering the snow cover)
North North-West

Wind intensity: Medium (20 – 40 km/h)

In the forest, LWD 1 still applies. Above the tree line, it is 3. On steep slopes, the fresh drift snow is immediately broken up and slips away when the tracks are made.

Overall impression

3 von 5 Sterne
Better

Very wintry. Unfortunately, it warmed up considerably in the valley during the day (plus degrees below 1000m). The wind was surprisingly bearable even on the high plateau and then at the summit (only a few gusts were really unpleasant). There were always short sunny spells (in the afternoon).

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
