Snow report Salzkammergut mountains, 02/25/2017
Skitourenversuch im Höllengebirge bei sehr wenig Schnee...
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Very little in the northern part of the Salzkammergut mountains. Unfortunately, the Snowgrid model does not apply here, a closed (old) snow cover only begins here on the north side from approx. 1100-1200m. (This is of course catastrophic for the low total altitude of the mountains (max. 1800m) and the mostly low starting points (500-600m). a few cm of fresh snow, which increases towards the top.
Snow quality
Pretty good. The fresh snow is a little damp at the bottom, but still easy to ski, and it gets even better towards the top. Underneath is a layer of old snow, partly grippy, partly harder. If only there was more...
Risks
Low. The old snow is very compact and the new snow has bonded well with the lower layer. if there is still snow on the south side, then the sunlight must of course be taken into account. there were no signs of wind in the forest.
Overall impression
Unfortunately, that was nothing. At the moment we can't recommend any skiing activities in the lower part of the region, unless you're in the mood for stretcher/downhill conditions like in early summer... If you should be in the area, then definitely look for high starting points and generally aim for higher mountains (e.g. Dachstein) Sorry, no pictures because camera empty and cell phone forgotten...You could have taken very nice snow rose pictures.
