Exposition
Snow condition
Still more than enough snow down to the valley (even in the forest).
Snow quality
Dust on crust" at the bottom. From about 1300m upwards, significantly more fresh snow (from yesterday or tonight), which was quite fluffy. Some blowing above the tree line, but only to a small extent for this winter.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: low
Risks
Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)
The situation here (Schneealm) is much more relaxed than in the west (Veitsch, Hochschwab), where it has probably snowed and stormed more. The LWD issued level 2 above the tree line for here, and level 3 for today from Veitsch/Hochschwab westwards (this was a short-term update). Potential dangers here are mainly huge cornices (hanging threateningly over the Lohmgraben and over the Heualm). Today's drift snow was only minor and small-scale.
Overall impression
Quite a sunny day and fairly little wind for the area, even right at the summit. Nice descent down to the alpine huts (soft fresh snow on a hard base). Soft snow in the forest up to about 1300m, then "dust on crust" at the bottom as mentioned.
