Snow report St. Moritz / Engadine, 02/14/2017
The snowless hell of Piz Palü We wanted to climb Palü today on our break day. However, the first glance at the ascent route quickly made us look for an alternative destination (Fortezzagrat).

Snow condition
You have to differentiate strongly here. The ascent along the normal route is currently only recommended for crevasse junkies. There is hardly any snow up to the ski depot. The crevasses are wide open or only covered with a non-load-bearing cap. Even the local natives are avoiding the route at the moment (no sign yet!). There were probably a few rope teams who had tried it in the last few days (information from the hut owner), but the tracks only reach as far as the first large glacier break. We then headed for the start of the Fortezza ridge and from there descended towards Morteratsch. Here, the wind had little to attack and we were able to ski down to the end of the glacier in wonderful powder (minimal cover)
Snow quality
It's still nice and loose where it is. But today it was almost +5°C at an altitude of 3000 m. So I can't say how long it will stay like this.
Risks
Everything was safe on the glacier - in the lower area (where the currently closed ski run from the Diavolezza also runs) there were some gullies that had already discharged.
Overall impression
Unfortunately no summit victory, but a beautiful descent. Shark hunting was the order of the day in the lower area.
