Exposition

Snow condition

20 cm fresh snow
Descent to valley (to 1700 m)

In the ski area, all variants are more or less easy to ski and are already completely plowed up. As is typical for Stubai, there are of course the odd rock lurking around. Lines with a glacier base are more relaxed to ski. Most of the crevasses are well covered in snow. Descent via pistes still possible. On the south side, things are getting a bit tight up to higher altitudes.

Snow quality

Breakable crust
Powder snow

Still good powder snow on the north side, but already somewhat settled. On the south side, a stable cover in the morning, which softens to swampy depending on the altitude. On the west side, the snow tends to be crushed (fortunately only on the ascent).

Risks

Old snow problem
Diurnal warming
North-Eas

Wind intensity: Medium (20 – 40 km/h)

The fresh snow has already settled well up to high alpine locations. In my opinion, drifting snow is hardly an issue anymore. According to the LWD, the old snow problem remains and should be assessed with some caution. However, apart from wet loose snow slides from sunny slopes, no old avalanche activity has been observed.

Overall impression

Worse

Beautiful tour on the Stubai Glacier. While the masses are all racing up to the Zuckerhütl and fighting their way down from the Pfaffenjoch through west-facing broken snow, there is a beautiful summit right next door with a much more rewarding descent. In the lower part of the Sulzenauferner, however, you have to be a little careful on the way out. Riders right goes down a somewhat steeper gully well, all the way riders left (standard variant) is only a little continuous terrain between rocks and ice.
