Saisonabschluss - Östlicher Daunkogel Nordflanke
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Snow conditions relatively poor for early July. The fresh snow of the past few days makes it look relatively attractive, but most of it will melt away again quickly with the next spell of good weather. At least it looks much better on the glacier than it did at the beginning of the week. However, you can slowly send your skis or board off for the summer break
Snow quality
Around 15cm of fresh snow at the top with a snow line of around 2300m is not too bad for the beginning of July. Early in the morning, the snow quality was quite good for the time of year, but of course it quickly deteriorated and became sticky with sunlight.
Risks
In steep terrain, watch out for wet snow slides caused by the sun's rays. Otherwise, crevasses pose a greater danger.
Overall impression
Good end to the season on the Stubai Glacier: thanks to the Stubai Ultratrail, the first gondola left at 6am today. This meant you could be at the top very early and make a few nice turns in the fresh snow, and the northern flank of the eastern Daunkogel still has enough snow for a "steep face descent". Ascent via the Rotadl mountain station and traverse towards the Daunscharten lift. The glacier break below the flank is already pitting and is best avoided in a wide arc. Bergschrund is already wide open for the most part. It is best to cross the whole of Lookers Left. The flank is only about 150m high, has relatively long snow in the season and is a maximum of 45 degrees steep.
