Ortler - Minnigeroderinne
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Descent into the Minnigeroderinne directly from the Ortler summit cross possible. The snow conditions in the gully are generally good. Only the narrow section relatively far down in the gully should be better avoided with a Riders left traverse and a descent via the piste to the valley station at 1900m.
Snow quality
The bottom third of the Minnigeroderinne consists of large avalanche cones/avalanche tracks. In the middle of the gully, loose snow has already slid down from about halfway, and in the upper half and away from the middle of the gully there was still (damp) powdery snow. Unfortunately, it was quite a mess on the ascent, but all the better on the descent. Due to the south-facing aspect, the snow was already wet at the top at 3900m despite the cold temperatures.
Risks
In the gully, you had to watch out for self-triggered loose snow avalanches, as you took a lot of sluff with you on the turns, and you shouldn't be out too late in the Minnigeroderinne due to its south-facing orientation. The night was starry, the temperatures were cool for the time of year and many loose snow chutes were already down, otherwise the descent would have had to take place much earlier. in general, there were many avalanche cones of loose snow chutes to be seen from steep, sunny terrain.
Overall impression
As a "day tour" from Sulden, the Minnigeroderinne is quite a long tour with a 2000m ascent, of which around 650m is on foot up the gully. A very early start at night is definitely recommended, as the uppermost part of the gully is directly in the sun. The descent is very demanding due to the steepness (approx. 45-50 degrees) and the length (approx. 650m). Definitely worth a trip for lovers of steep descents in suitable conditions. In addition to the descent, the outstanding panorama from the summit is also worthwhile and the path to the start of the gully also offers nice views (including the north face of the Königsspitze).
Incidentally, we were the only people on the summit of the Ortler today, which I wouldn't have expected on a Saturday with outstanding weather.
