Overall, the amount of snow in the Tannheim mountains is rather low due to the circumstances. Nevertheless, quite a lot of fresh snow has fallen in the last week. It is possible to start from the valleys and at the moment even some of the south-facing ski tours can be undertaken. In the night from Wednesday to Thursday there was the last significant snowfall with around 5 cm in the valley. Unfortunately, it got very warm on Thursday evening (7.1.15) and as a result it rained down to around 1800 m. This had a negative effect on the snow cover.

We have now been out in the Tannheimer Tal for 3 days in a row and encountered very different snow conditions. Wednesday and Thursday the snow quality was very good despite a little wind influence and the snow was powdery. Unfortunately, rain set in yesterday evening up to an altitude of around 1800m and turned the powder into a hardpack. In addition, the snow cover today showed a strong wind influence and above the rain line the snow was wind pressed. For these reasons, the snow was difficult to ski today.

Risks

The avalanche situation was not entirely harmless. Firstly, there is a surprising amount of snow at summit level and secondly, it has fallen under the influence of strong winds (ridges and summits are heavily blown off).

Overall impression

After the first three notable ski days of the season, we could be quite satisfied.
