Snow report Tannheimer Valley, 01/23/2021
first good ski tour of the season

Overall impression
Snow condition
there is about 30cm of snow at 1000m, then about 5cm overnight in the mountains east of the iller.
Snow quality
the situation is divided into two parts. in the open, up to below 1700m, there is still good pow, partly wind-capped on edges and crests. the cap breaks easily and is easy to ride. in the forest, on the other hand, it is horrible. the snow that has fallen from the trees has produced a kind of half-frozen cap. there is a bit of pow on top. but the cap doesn't hold and you have to circle quite a bit to get past the trees.
Risks
today was level 2, for this region (of course i was not in the tannheimer tal, but in its "german foothills"). the 2 is o.k., no sliding snow, loose snow or wet snow slides, not even on steep slopes and meadow slopes. i skied down about 40° today. no more settling noises, no slides triggered. the quite heavy pow holds quite well.
Overall impression
since today was my first good tour of the season, there was fresh snow overnight and the sun even came out at the end of the day, i would have given it 4 stars, but the mountain rescue exercises with snowmobiles and skijoring behind them, in an otherwise totally deserted valley, almost reminded me of a motocross track, so only a 3.
