Snow report Tannheimer Valley, 01/24/2021
der tourist und das virus
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
start at 900m, approx. 30cm. further up more and more, but in open areas partly totally blown off. summit area partly bare. in the mountains east of the iller the new snow growth overnight was insignificant.
Snow quality
quite changeable. without wind influence, from the valley, still good pow. quite heavy, but easy to ski, at least on the north side. influenced by wind, either blown down to the hardpack, from the previous thaw, or capped by wind, or loaded with drifting snow. but everything is still in the "green" range. the cap is often worn and the drifting snow is good to ski.
Risks
today, at least below the forest line, the two of them are fine again. i only heard a settling noise once when i was tracking. even steeper slope areas (up to approx. 40°) are easy to walk and ski on. no cracking when tracking and also no dislodging when skiing down. i didn't see any signs of sliding snow today. instead, there was a pretty strong wind from the west, which transported some snow. the topic of drifting snow will dominate the avalanche situation in the coming days. the insignificant amount of fresh snow had fallen in a rather grayish layer and could be a weak layer for new snow.
Overall impression
to explain the teaser:
the tourist is unwanted, he no longer brings money, but the virus. this is quite noticeable in the pp situation.
after 10h (and there are certain disadvantages for those arriving compared to the locals) there are no more free pp.
this results in a relatively new situation, you can no longer do the tour that was planned, but (only) the one where you can park!!!!
furthermore, there are completely new income opportunities for the locals in terms of parking space management. at the pp buronlifte you have to pay directly at the entrance, at the pp guard (€5/d). this saves the tariff change at the machine and prevents the ticket from being resold in the afternoon. furthermore, if the pp space becomes too scarce, more spaces are simply cleared. but that's ok. and today was sunday after all.
new skills are also required for the descent in the non-mainstream area (i.e. not directly under the lift). regularly climbing over barbed wire fences with skis on your feet requires careful consideration.
recognizing barbed wire fences that are only superficially snow-covered is very important for people and equipment.
in addition, electric fence tapes, which are preferably stretched in white, can sometimes only be recognized very late. but this trains the eye and leg reflexes immensely.
furthermore, ski tourers who have never heard of such famous ski mountains as reuter wanne or ornach should urgently familiarize themselves with them. in the medium term, these are certainly more important than the hochvogel, or the wasserfallkarspitze ...
