Snow condition
You can still start from the parking lot (parking lot of the former border crossing), but it gets really tight. At 1000m there is no closed snow cover and you have to carry your skis again and again. A closed snow cover can be found from approx. 1300m depending on the exposure. It looks really bad on the south side.
Snow quality
The warm temperatures are noticeably affecting the quality. The entire snow cover was soaked and wet. From 1500m, there was a supporting layer, but the conditions changed with every turn. As soon as you got close to a tree, it was like riding in a swamp. It was really difficult to ski today, you need to have a certain amount of technique.
Risks
Our tour today went up to just under 1700m. We were able to observe sliding snow avalanches in almost all exposures. As you can see in the pictures, the large cornices looked quite threatening. I wouldn't touch the "steep" slope at the moment. At the summit it was +5 degrees! Ridges are blown off and free, lee sides well filled, as soon as the fresh snow comes and the danger spots are no longer visible, it gets really dangerous. I would recommend everyone to start early in the morning!
Overall impression
I would give it 1.5 stars today if I could.
We were able to enjoy the tour up the Schönkahler despite the difficult conditions. In any case, it was the better choice than walking up some slopes with 1000 others. I hope it gets cold tomorrow and Mrs. Holle shakes something out of the sky again.
