Snow report Tannheimer Valley, 02/08/2021
the best day of the season (so far)
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
sufficient at 1000m, even in the forest. free choice of lines, in ascent and descent, almost unrestrictedly possible. of course, in the summit area, ridges and ridges are often blown off, but otherwise you can also step on the gas. i was out today until just above the forest line, but in all expos. a total of approx. 30cm.
Snow quality
overnight there was about 10cm of fresh pow. underneath it was about 5cm, a kind of "snow-rain layer". unfortunately, this does not wear and is quite soft. underneath it is harder and well set. however, you often break in. in the forest, on the other hand, this layer wears more often.
Risks
the bavarian 2 fits well today. i also drove >40°. due to the "warm" snowfall with rain, which then turned into snowfall, the fresh snow is holding very well. all the snowfall came without much wind, moreover. drifting snow is not a big issue at the altitude described. actually a stable 2 and a good starting position for even more snow and lower temperatures. no snow slides or snow planks seen. on the other hand, there are slippery snow mouths everywhere, sometimes quite difficult to recognize under the fresh snow!
Overall impression
one star for the good weather. the second for the fresh pow, which has also held up on the snow side. on the sun side, the morning is guaranteed to be capped. the third for the fact that the snow conditions can still be considered sufficient. the fourth for the fact that I was able to be out and about alone and make tracks and the whole thing didn't look so good when I left home relatively late.
as i said, the best day for me so far this season ;-)
