Driving through the Gotthard tunnel is like entering another world. In the northern Alps, a foehn storm and snow like at the beginning of November, on the other side of the tunnel: snowfall and meter-high walls of snow. At about 1000m there is about 1m, at 2000m certainly 1.5m +x The first roofs are being cleared, which speaks for a very good snow situation...
Snow quality
In the valley at 1200m it was wet snowfall and correspondingly slushy. The further up you got, the better, not perfect powder, but still very fine skiing. The whole thing with very little wind influence.
Risks
LLB 3! No avalanche activity observed, but we were also moving in moderately steep terrain due to the poor visibility. Less wind influence than expected below 2200m, I can't say what it looks like further up. Caution is definitely advised.
Overall impression
First low day of the year, with moderate visibility, good snow and some face shots. It looks like we'll have to make a few more trips south this year.
