Tronador, Pico Argentino — the good kind of suffering

Saturday we rolled out of the campers at a civilised 9 a.m. and walked up to the Otto Meiling hut, where we bedded down in the winter room. The winter room does not have heating. The winter room does not care about your comfort. It was a cold night, and we all pretended otherwise. Five a.m. start Sunday to climb Pico Argentino, up past seracs the size of several apartment blocks. We got to watch one collapse in front of us, which is one of those things that's spectacular for about half a second before your brain catches up. Crevasse coverage was excellent, which helped. Powder up top, corn and wind-pressed snow further down, and a bootpack at the very top where we spent a solid while regretting that we hadn't brought skis, because the snow there was genuinely good. The real jackpot was the weather: two sunny, stable days with almost no wind, in Patagonia, which basically never happens. Twelve hours later we were back at the campers in Pampa Linda, horizontal, beer in hand. What a vulcano. What a landscape. Highly recommend, and yes, there was powder.
